Field operations, O&M and adoption: systems that survive the roof
Design for six roles, work offline, capture once, and run O&M as a loop from alert to renewal. The adoption chapter.
- Six roles: surveyor, crew lead, supervisor, store keeper, technician, accounts.
- Offline-first and one-entry-per-fact are non-negotiable.
- Name a retirement date for the chat group as the record.
- O&M is a loop: alert, ticket, dispatch, visit, report, renewal.
- Measure one task per role.
Quick answer
Field software succeeds when it is faster than the WhatsApp group for each role's daily tasks. Design for six roles, make it work offline, capture photos, serials and checklists in one step, and name a date when the chat group stops being the record. Run O&M as a loop from monitoring alert to ticket, visit, report and AMC renewal, and measure one task per role, not logins.
Adoption first
A system with no field data is a very expensive notice board. The pattern for getting people to use new software is in will my team actually use the new system; the solar-specific version, with roles and daily tasks, is in getting site teams to use the system.
| Role | Screen should serve |
|---|---|
| Surveyor | Structured survey with required photos, offline |
| Crew lead | Today’s job, material, checklist, serial scan |
| Supervisor | Site status, change request with price |
| Store keeper | Goods receipt, issue to project, returns |
| O&M technician | Ticket, unit history, visit form |
| Accounts | Cost by project, milestone evidence |
O&M as a loop
From alert to renewal
Set the low-generation alert threshold from your own site history, not a borrowed number. Check each inverter brand’s monitoring portal for API, export or alert-email options before committing to an integration. See O&M and AMC.
Do this first
Shadow one crew lead for a day and note every fact they enter twice. Count installed sites with an active AMC and a known end date.
Next: choosing the system. Back to start here.
Our own operating model; no outside figures. We have made no claims about any inverter brand’s API.
